How I’ve Been Protected by Those Who Serve

For every negative news story where police are involved, there are thousands of positive incidents involving officers.  Please take a moment today to read a positive story during our not so positive times.

What does it mean for a police officer to protect and serve? Officers have the ability to spend time in their local communities, day or night, rain or shine, to assist citizens with a range of requests. That is what it means to protect. Officers are also able to be the first ones on the scene when someone needs assistance. That is what it means to serve. “To protect and serve” isn’t just a vow for law enforcement officers. It is also a privilege.

Today is August 1st, 2020. On this day, three years ago, I was going to stop to pick up dinner for my wife and I when I drove into the restaurant parking lot, had a heart attack, and passed out. My vehicle ran into several other cars in the parking lot while I was unconscious, and then someone called 911.

There was an officer that happened to be close by that day. His name is Zack Kowalske, and he immediately came to the scene to help me. He broke my window, got me out of the car, gave me CPR, and got me to the hospital. He saved my life on that day.

People say that police exist solely to bring law and order, but what Zack did had nothing to do with law and order. Our law enforcement vows to protect and serve, and Zack certainly protected and rescued me.

For every negative news story where police are involved, there are thousands of positive incidents involving officers like Zack, officers who carry out their duty to protect and to serve American citizens every day without question. Every day, thousands of police officers are there for our communities when they need them most.

In order for American society to function, someone must look out for its citizens and enforce peace and order. Someone has to put themselves out there and ensure their fellow Americans are looked after. It is an important job, one that demands people with powerful ideals like integrity, compassion, and a willingness to make personal sacrifices, people who are willing to put themselves in the line of fire so that the rest of society can thrive.

Every day, thousands of police officers devote themselves to protecting and serving American citizens, so our society can continue to thrive. And that is why police officers are an essential part of the fabric of this nation. God bless all police officers.
